Please consider the Truth About Nursing in your year-end gift giving. We must improve nursing's standing in our health care system. And that starts with improving public understanding of the profession!
The Truth does that every day. We help the media do a better job of portraying nursing to the world. We help nurses analyze what the media is saying about them. And we wrote the book Saving Lives (a great holiday gift!) to help everyone understand the importance of nursing's troubled image. But we also empower nurses and their supporters to advocate for nursing.
That's what we did in recent weeks, when we all spoke forcefully to the Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) about the naughty nurses in the "Dr. Lung Love" video. Together, with your excellent letters and calls to LCA, with our relentless lobbying of the LCA leadership, and with our numerous press contacts, we got coverage in the influential Modern Healthcare magazine, and persuaded LCA to remove the video from its lunglove.com web site.
But it takes resources to mount an effective campaign and persuade powerful media creators to improve. It takes resources to maintain a real Internet presence, and to pursue innovative ideas to spread the truth about nursing. Our tiny staff donates virtually all of its labor, but we do need basic equipment, supplies, and other resources.
Patients deserve better care. But nurses can't help them if nurses are undervalued, which undermines their claims to resources for education, research, residencies, and clinical practice.
So let's get nurses a seat at the decision-making table. Let's create a world in which nurses have a manageable number of patients, in which nurses can advocate for patients without fear, and in which nursing educators get what they need to teach a new generation of nurses and continue their cutting-edge research.
You can help us achieve that world. We know this is a difficult time for many, but we urge you to donate whatever you can afford today. We have been working since 2001 to improve nursing's image and we have made real progress. See some of our successes. Much remains to be done, but together, we can do it!
