Is transforming your health and personal image through weight loss one of your New Year's resolutions? We can help--and make it stick for life!
If you have made a resolution to lose weight, we have a comprehensive plan designed specifically for nurses that will help you
lose weight now and keep it off for the rest of your life. Promise.
Helping nurses transform their health and personal image for life
Nursing often involves emotional stress and physical demands, elevating cortisol, all of which can take a toll on a nurse's weight. We want to empower you to transform your health and personal image by helping you maintain a healthy weight. We know that being overweight often leads to diabetes, heart disease, aching or broken bones. Eating certain foods can lead to inflammation and cancer. When you improve your health by eating better, you look great, but the effects go beyond your personal image. When nurses look healthy, our job of educating patients about how to become healthier becomes a whole lot easier. And the nursing profession as a whole can benefit from a healthier, more confident image!
As nurses, we will be using nutrition science, an examination of our personal stories, and compelling media presentations to help you bring about weight loss to transform your life. We will not ask you to go hungry! Nor are we embracing any fad diet that is not maintainable. You will make the choices about what to eat, not us, but we can help guide you to healthier choices. The changes are possible. The strategists behind this program are Sandy and Harry Summers, co-authors of Saving Lives: WHy the Media's Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk. They have created this plan for themselves over decades, developing significant knowledge of nutrition, tasty cooking, and exercise. They aren't young models, they are 50 somethings but their BMIs are 21 and 20 respectively, and have cholesterol, HDLs, LDL and triglyceride levels better than any their nurse practitioner has ever seen. They will help you find a healthy, painless, delicious diet that you will be able to sustain for life. They say if they can do it, you can too, and will inspire you to share their confidence in you!
You know we are focused on the media here at the Truth About Nursing, so we will use compelling movies and other media as touchstones for discussion and exploration of our habits and our lives. A subscription to some DVD / streaming service, like Netflix, will be helpful.
Scroll down the page and sign up today and put your New Year's resolution into action! Please let us know if you have any questions at transform@truthaboutnursing.org.
Once you join, we'll ask you to check in with us about your diet and your lifestyle, and in return we offer you personalized guidance about specific steps you can take to transform your body, your life and your health. We will also be having some group conversations online, where there will be ongoing discussions with others on the same track in the program (we will only use your first name, but please let us know if you would like to use an alias instead).
To begin, we need the following 7 things emailed to us at transform@truthaboutnursing.org:
1) A full-size photo of you before you begin; we’d also request one at the end of your 10 weeks.
2) Your weight, if you know it, before you begin; we’d also request that at the end of the 10 weeks.
3) A log of everything you have had to eat and drink for the past day, few days or week. We will take as much information as you remember and are willing to share with us—confidentiality is guaranteed, we only care about your health—but please try to record everything (even what goes in your coffee and the ketchup on your sandwich). We will also be asking you to keep a daily food log so we can help guide you along the way.
4) Your sleep hours--how many hours and the time of day you sleep.
5) Your work schedule, hours and days.
6) Your exercise -- include exercise you get at work, and especially how many minutes you walk. If you have a device to count steps, please include that information. Please try to be as accurate as possible so we can help you!
